Hightlights pros and their techniques November 29, 2008 New England Yankee (Northern New England) This has become the photography magazine I look for first in the rack when at the bookstore. There are 3 or 4 types of photo magazine in the marketplace: high art & avant-garde (e.g., Aperture, B&W), how-to (e.g., Photoshop user), reviews-focused (e.g., Shutterbug), and general interest. There are countless how-to mags out there, all of which get repetitive and most of which tend to be very basic. I've come to avoid the review-focused magazines, as MUCH more comprehensive reviews can typically be found online these days, and are more timely besides. The reviews mags also tend to be stuffed with ads - often half the magazine or more. I enjoy the art mags, but only buy them when a particular issue appeals to me, as many of them are quite expensive per issue. That leaves the general interest category. In the US, that includes American Photo, Digital Photo Pro (this magazine), PDN (Photo District News), perhaps Outdoor Photography, and not a whole lot more. This category also overlaps to a degree with the review and equipment-centric magazines such as Popular Photography and Peterson's, however. I find myself buying Photo Pro more often than the others because there are typically multiple articles of interest, where with the others I'm often buying the magazine for a single article. Photo Pro's stock in trade is in-depth articles on pros, focusing on their unique look and technique, but will also toss in the odd article on something else. There was an excellent two-part series on HDR technique recently, for example. Production qualities are excellent - good color reproduction and printed on decent stock, unlike the true mass market mags. Good magazine. 4 stars for some uneveness from issue to issue, but most are worthwhile.
HORRIBLE Subscription Service! April 7, 2008 E. Ho 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
I purchased a gift subscription online last October, 2007, but it is April 2008, and my aunt and uncle have yet to receive their issue. I called the DPP subscription department in January, and they said they had no record of my order. Funny, since I had a printed confirmation in my files...Anyway, I went through the ordering process (again) over the telephone, and that was supposed to take care of it. Fast-forward to April, 2008, and still no issues had been delivered! I called customer service and the rep said that "the late date" (meaning the latest date of arrival) was end of March. I asked when they could expect an issue.. Apparently, the next "late date" is May 2, and I should call back if they don't get the next one. We reconfirmed the mailing address (correct), and the rep suggested that the issue got lost in the mail. This is possible, but I guess we'll have to wait until May to see if this happens again. They wouldn't issue a refund, but said they could add an issue to the end of the subscription. This is ridiculous...What company takes 5-6 months to get ONE issue delivered?!!! I have never written a negative review like this, and I understand that my comments don't review the articles. However, I purchased a magazine gift SUBSCRIPTION and the delivery service is what I bought, along with the magazine itself. If Digital Photo Pro can't deliver on their promise to send a gift (that's been paid for), then others deserve to know. Update: Well, they never received the May issue, so I insisted on a refund, which they sent to my aunt and uncle. I didn't ask them to send the check to them, though. I guess they didn't they consider that i might get them a different gift with the refund? Hands down, this is my WORST CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE EVER.
Wish I could rate it! April 6, 2008 Jane E. Russell (Clarksville, TN) 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
I sure wish I could rate it but I haven't even received the first issue yet! I contacted the magazine and they say it should be here in 4-6 more weeks. I placed my order back in February and it's now April!!!! It's not Amazon's fault!!!
I look forward to it every month February 12, 2008 R. Johansen 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I always find this magazine well written and informative. I enjoy it from cover to cover. It is geared towards the professional (or wannabe professional) photographer. The review of equipment and software are great, the showcase of up and coming photographers is inspiring and the images in the magazine are of high quality. Personally it is my favorite photography mag.

I cannot review an item I have not received yet, this is a subscription, and the first issue has not reached me yet.
