Already an accomplished poet and novelist before he ambled into the music business in his mid-'30s, Leonard Cohen has remained as musically influential as he is publicly enigmatic for four decades. This celebration of Cohen's songbook began as a free concert that quickly mushroomed into a star-studded live tribute film shot at Sydney's famed Opera House and Brighton Dome. Musically supervised by Hal Willner (who's produced similar recorded tributes to Mingus, Monk, Rota and Weill), it recasts Cohen's evocative, emotionally uncompromising songs in compelling performances by singers who range from fellow cult heroes Nick Cave and Beth Orton to energetic newcomer Teddy Thompson and even rock gods U2. The latter's powerful collaboration with Cohen himself on the signature "Tower of Song" bookends Martha Wainright's solo opening rendition of the composition, deftly underscoring the project's eclectic artisanship in the bargain. Cave somehow channels the title track through Chicago's South Side via Weimar Berlin, while Teddy Thompson ponders "The Future" with exuberance and The Handsome Family informs "Famous Blue Raincoat" with elegant melodrama. Other standouts include Rufus Wainwright's nouveau Tango work-up of "Everybody Knows," Perla Batalla's gorgeous, Norteno-seasoned "Bird On a Wire" and her collaborations with Cave and Julia Christenson on "Suzanne" and "Anthem." A collection that's both a savvy primer to Cohen's catalog and impressive artistic achievement in its own right. --Jerry McCulley

This soundtrack features powerful performances of Cohen masterpieces by an outstanding array of today's top singer-songwriters. The tracks on the CD were recorded live at Hal Willner's "Came So Far For Beauty: An Evening of Leonard Cohen Songs", at the Brighton Dome as part of the Brighton Festival 2004 and at the Sydney Opera House as part of the Sydney Festival 2005, except "Tower of Song"featuring Leonard Cohen and U2.

2 out of 5 stars Key track missing   October 29, 2008
Michael B. Hoy (Brisbane Australia)
Having watched the documentary, I purchased the CD. However the key track, 'Hallelujah' was not on it! I am very disappointed, as I regarded that as the peak of the experience.

5 out of 5 stars The One Album Everyone Should Hear   October 1, 2008
Richard D. Greenwood (Philadelphia, PA USA)
I am, but you don't have to be a Leonard Cohen fan to find "I Am Your Man" moving, soul touching, and inspirational. An ensemble of outstanding talents join together to pay tribute to Cohen's genius; in the process they create an album that ranks among the very best I've ever heard. The final track alone, with U2 backing Cohen, makes the album worth owning.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good CD - Not Perfect though   July 6, 2008

I first was introduced to Cohen a few years ago and loved his music. Later when I saw "I'm Your Man" on Sundance I was completely enraptured by many of the performances on it. I was happy to see a CD was made of the songs.

I will say my favorite is probably the amazing cover of Anthem by Perla Betalla and Julie Christensen, though this is very closely followed by Rufus' Chelsea Hotel #2 and Teddy Thompson's Tonight Will be Fine. Another in the top list would be Antony's If it be your will.

Not quite as good but definitely worth it are Nick Cave doing Suzanne and then Sisters of Mercy by Beth Orton.

The other songs are not quite as memorable imo, but still great songs.

I was sorely dissapointed that both the Handsome Family's version of A Thousand Kisses Deep was missing as was the Wainright version of Hallelujah (One of the greatest covers of Hallelujah ever).

I can see why alot of people may not have liked this CD though if your a very old and hardcore Cohen fan. No one really sounds like Cohen and if you like that deep base voice then there is no one that will really touch Cohen for singing his songs. Personally, I think Cohen is a much better writer than singer and I prefer to hear other people sing most of his songs (with some exceptions, I think he sings Tower of Song, Suzanne, and A Thousand Kisses Deep well).

That being said, Cohen's writing is amazing. He truly is one of the most gifted poets/songwriters still alive.

4 out of 5 stars Old fan with renewed interest   July 4, 2008
Ed Sejud (Boulder, Colorado)
I bought this CD soundtrack after seeing the video on television. It contains more songs than the video, including "Tower of Song" done my Martha Wainright. I've been a Leonard Cohen fan since the 60s, but lost interest in him when his career seemed to wander and eventually he seemed to disappear. But the video renewed my interest. The video was excellent, and I think the CD soundtrack is really a good selection of his songs as well. It introduced me to Rufus and Martha Wainright and the McGarrigles, singers that had previously escaped my intention. It also introduced me to Beth Orton, who sings "Sisters of Mercy" on the video and CD. So my comment is that it renewed my interest in Leonard Cohen and now I have names of artists I'd never heard of before to follow.
