Middle of the road model, read on for interesting ink facts October 26, 2008 K. Andrews I bought this printer simply for the fact that I had run across the HP 57 OEM ink cartridges marked down to $3 at Staples. It seemed like a great bargain, and I just found the lowest price HP printer that uses these cartridges so my children would have their own printer for school projects. So far the printer has held up well, but I only use very high quality paper, HP Bright White Inkjet paper to eliminate dust particles that can clog a printer over time. I'm positive this has made a difference in eliminating break-downs and paper jams. I even printed over 40,000 sheets on one printer I owned before it finally needed repair. About this printer: it's nice to have a built in scanner, which comes in handy for scanning in important documents and of course pictures, when the relatives want to see the kids school pictures. It's also helpful to have the copy function, which my son found useful the other night when he forgot to bring home his homework, and he just needed to borrow a neighbors homework sheet to make a copy of it. Saved by the printer! It also has the ability to make copies in color or black and white, as well as in photo or plain qualities. There are three things I don't like about this printer. First of all, it's noisy, second, it doesn't have good access if you needed to clear a paper jam. It just opens from the front paper tray panel, so it allows you to replace ink cartridges but that's about it. Also, the fast draft does not produce as nice a printout as fast draft on my other HP printer. Still, we tend to print most things in fast draft to save on ink, and we tend to replace our ink 3 times a year. The included software is nice for editing photos if you don't own other photo editing software. I found the tan and blemish eraser tools to be helpful. Finally, onto the subject of ink. The included ink cartridges, HP 21 and 22 are really not the best. Each included cartridge holds 5 ml of ink, but this printer can just as easily accept the 54 and 57 cartridges which hold 20 ml and 17 ml respectively. I highly recommend that your recycle the included cartridges and get $3 from any office supply store that recycles, and then buy the 54 and 57 cartridges from a discount source and get the $10 and $15 refills from Walgreen's. You'll save a ton of money over the long run vs. constantly running out of ink on 21 and 22 cartridges.
