Great HW, weak SW January 7, 2009 Willysp Have had this for a week and overall pleased. Comments (based on only 35mm slides): - Very good HW; solidly built, good scan quality - HW dust removal takes a long time, and not very effective. It's quicker (with good results) for me to use an anti-static brush on the slides, and then use the Healing Tool in PS CS4. - 6 color and higher bit depth make the scan time significantly longer, and I can't see a difference in high dpi scans. - The HP-provided software is the weak link here. Settings and Help are both spread out in 2 or 3 different areas, and hard to understand (and I work with computers for a living). - The deal-breaker for me regarding the HP software is that the auto- select/crop for slides is always off. It consistently cuts off left and bottom (and the amount varies), and there is no way to fix it except laboriously selecting each single slide, zooming in, manually changing the selection area, zooming out - and doing this 16 times for a batch of slides. - I switched to Vuescan SW and am quite pleased with it. Significantly more features and easier to use. Overall, very pleased with quality and price of the scanner, but IMO it needs 3rd party SW to make it easy to use.
Fine Scanner January 6, 2009 Katherine J. Camara (Arizona) The scanner meets my full needs. Scans and allows me to save the documents for later use.
EXCELLENT January 6, 2009 Barry Clark Bauer (St. Johns, Mi.) I have Vista and it works great on my computer. I know there's been some complaints about that. The best price I've found!
Problen]ms if you have both HP-G4050- and Photosmart D7360 December 27, 2008 Mansoor A. Saifi (USA) I bought this form Amazon, it was defective, and Amzon was fast in shipping a repalcement. My problems started when I installed the HP supplied software version 8.2 for Windows Media XP on the HP computer. The installed scanner would not work. Had four days of back and forth e-mails with HP help center.Did every thing they suggested, none worked. At last HP help center suggested going to HP website and downloading a new version of software (9). Was confused because similar version 9 for Microsoft Vista. I was told it is new software for XP Media Edition and once this software was installed it works. Still lot of bugs, for example can not remove the old version (8.2) from the computer, and often the system stops responding. HP needs to improve their software and software patches. I normally do not post any comments, but if you have HP Photsmart Printer, beware of the software incompatiblity between HP G4050 and Photsamart D7360.
HP Scanjet G4050 December 20, 2008 Ronald H. Lindabury (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA USA) Bought to scan pictures from albums that were deteriorating. It has been preforming great, pictures and slides, and negatives. The software that came with it has been great also. Would recommend to anyone.
